The IGF Secretariat organized a 3-day training workshop in Lima, Peru, designed to build the capacity of government officials to incorporate gender considerations in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) policies and practices, as well as provide a platform for women miners to share their experiences and actively participate in shaping solutions.

The event brought together a group of more than 30 participants, including actors from the regions of Ayacucho, Madre de Dios, and Puno. A diverse set of officials attended, including those from ministries responsible for mining, labour, health, environment, and women and vulnerable populations. In addition, the workshop was completed by pallaqueras—women who collect residual gold ore along the mountainsides of Peru.

The training program consisted of five modules, each focusing on key issues affecting women in ASM, including barriers to participation, formalization, health and safety, and a session discussing the path forward for stakeholders.

During the workshop, participants outlined the main challenges they face and identified opportunities for progress. Participants from Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines said the training would help them reform and expand their strategy on gender equality and ASM.
