In collaboration with Brazil’s Agência Nacional de Mineração (ANM), the IGF delivered a week-long training on mine closure and abandoned mine management. The program aimed to strengthen the Brazilian government’s capacity to assess and manage mine closure plans, as well as address abandoned mine sites.
The training involved 4 days of classroom-based learning and a 1-day field visit to the Minas de Águas Claras site. It brought together over 30 participants from ANM, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), and environmental authorities from several states, including Minas Gerais, Pará, and Rio Grande do Sul. The workshop fostered strong collaboration and engagement between ANM and environmental agencies, strengthening efforts to support mine closure management in Brazil.
Sessions covered global best practices in mine closure, along with the technical, environmental, and social aspects of closure and rehabilitation. Other topics included cost estimation and reclamation planning, challenges and opportunities related to mine closure, and examinations of relevant Brazilian and international case studies. Participants also received practical training on how to use the IGF’s Abandoned Mine Inventory and Risk Assessment Tool.
The training laid the foundation for continued collaboration between IGF and ANM to develop guidance on mine closure planning, as well as inventory and risk management of abandoned mines.
