In collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Ecological Transition, the IGF delivered its first decentralized training on environmental management in Kédougou, Senegal.
The 3-day workshop brought together 30 participants from across the mining and environment sectors, including regional authorities, to strengthen their capacity to review Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and oversee mining companies’ compliance with environmental regulations.
The program covered
- best practices in reviewing the contents of ESIAs;
- International Finance Corporation Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability, with a focus on biodiversity and water management; and
- the ten principles of mine closure and rehabilitation.
In addition to theoretical learning, participants visited the Petowal Mining Company, an industrial gold mine. Together, these training sessions helped equip participants with the knowledge and tools to strengthen environmental management in Senegal’s mining sector.
